Extreme includes the most conventionally catchy, pop melodies of Molly Nilsson’s career to date—but also from the fact that essentially, the album sounds like it was recorded in the early-to-mid 1980s.
At this point, the ‘80s revival and nostalgia seems to be as unstoppable as it is ubiquitous, and the warm, lush, embracing synth tones and beefy MTV guitars all over Extreme have a kind of synth-pop-meets-Air Supply/REO Speedwagon/Toto quality that 40 years ago would probably have seemed irremediably staid and thirtysomething-ish, but that now seems pretty cool.
